Introduction

The Coastal Safari Experience – Marine Big 5 is South Africa’s best introduction to what our majestic coastline has to offer, sight-seeing, wine tasting, marine big 5 and more – proudly brought to you by Biggestleaf Travel.

This 18-day adventure will have you soaking up the sights and sounds of the Mother City; indulging in the tastes and charms of the Winelands, exploring the coastline of Whale and Garden route.

Day 1-5 – The Cape Grace, Cape Town
Arrive at Cape Town International, collect your hired car and take a short drive to the Cape Grace Hotel in the beautiful V&A Waterfront.
Centrally situated on a private marina in the harbour, the Cape Grace has all the hallmarks of a classic five star hotel: luxury rooms, friendly service, effortless sophistication and the overriding sense that everything in this world is right.

Stay four nights at the Cape Grace exploring Africa’s most beautiful city. Attractions in Cape Town are many and varied. Starting at the Waterfront itself you have plenty to see and do and from there you can explore the city, the beaches, Table Mountain, Cape Point, Boulders Beach, Constantia Winelands, Robben Island and Kirstenbosch.

Day 5-7 – La Residence, Franschhoek
If the Cape Grace is one of South Africa’s finest large hotels, La Residence is easily one of South Africa’ finest boutique hotels. More a private villa than a hotel, La Residence is a palatial five star guesthouse in the beautiful Franschhoek valley surrounded by the patchwork patterns of vineyards framed by enormous mountain ranges in every direction.
With hundreds of wine farms to discover, award-winning restaurants on every corner and wonderful scenery, Franschhoek and the Cape Winelands is South Africa’s equivalent of Provence in southern France.

Day 7-10 – Grootbos, Hermanus
A short drive from Franschhoek to the Whale Route town of Hermanus takes you to another Royal Portfolio luxury hotel: Birkenhead House. Featuring the same eclectic and grand decor and the same five star service and luxury, Birkenhead is on a rocky promontory overlooking Walker Bay where the whales come so close the shore you can almost touch them.
The whale-watching season runs from June to November, which happily coincides with the best game viewing in South Africa. While the coastline along the Garden Route supports 37 species of whale and dolphin, the Whale Route is most known for its close encounters from land or boat of southern right and humpback whales and Haviside’s, common, dusky and bottlenose dolphins.

Day 10-14 – Tsala Treetop Lodge, Plettenberg Bay
A longer drive today – about 5 hours – takes you to Plettenberg Bay with a slight inland deviation into the forests of a private reserve where the luxury suites are built at canopy level. Tsala Treetop Lodge successfully combines luxury, privacy and an exciting treetop experience.
Well spaced and connected by elevated boardwalks, the suites comprise a lounge, en suite bathroom, large bedroom and a private deck with a bracing plunge pool built-in. So sublime is the luxury you can easily forget you are several metres in the air. But the surrounding trees and views of the forest-covered hills are a gentle reminder of your elevated status.

Plettenberg Bay has wonderful beaches and the surrounding area has plenty to do including some first rate golf courses, nature reserves, hiking trails, river excursions, animal rehabilitation programmes and a many excellent restaurants and cafes.

Day 14-18 – Thonga Beach Lodge, Durban North Coast
Early morning drive to George Airport along the coast for about two hours. Drop off your car at the airport and board your flight to Durban. On arrive at Durban, collect your hired car and take a drive north to the Thonga Beach Lodge.
* Note: if the drive from Durban airport to Thonga sounds a bit much after your flight, please let us transfer you directly to the lodge.

For that exclusive and awe-inspiring beach holiday, Thonga Beach Lodge is one of the finest spots in KwaZulu-Natal. Only metres away from a secluded, unspoilt beach that boasts pristine coral reefs and 1,250 species of fish this hotel promises a holiday filled with snorkeling and scuba-diving. Plus: the thatched bush suites offer stunning ocean views.

Day 18 – Departure
Drive to Durban Airport along the coast for about 5 hours. Drop off your car at the airport and board your flight and onward travel plans.

Cape Grace

The Cape Grace is widely regarded as one of Cape Town’s best hotels. Quite simply, this hotel has it all. The V&A Waterfront is one of Cape Town’s biggest attractions offering a myriad of shops, restaurant and activities. Just a few steps out of the Cape Grace’s front door you can board a boat trip to Robben Island, catch a helicopter tour of the peninsula or visit the aquarium. Be sure to return in time to enjoy a cocktail with one of the best views Cape Town has to offer.

Cape Grace offers a number of different room types, each one designed to fulfil every need, whether it be an intimate honeymoon or a fun-filled family getaway. Each uniquely decorated room is a treasure trove of contemporary and antique pieces, blending old and the new into a stylish sanctuary of comfort.

La Residence

La Residence is situated in the Franschhoek Valley on a 30-acre estate filled with vines, fruit trees, flowers and herbs. It is a romantic and indulgent paradise whose magnificent interior is filled with rich fabrics, wonderful artwork and antique furniture. Eleven individually-decorated suites enjoy vibrant colour schemes and spectacular views.
Palatial en-suite bathrooms ooze glamour. On hot days, the shimmering infinity pool beckons. Sip drinks under a shady umbrella, or relax with treatments in the Spa. The air-conditioned Gym caters for the more energetic!

Thonga Beach Lodge

Set on the pristine shores of the Maputaland coast, this luxury lodge is the ideal place to discover one of the last unspoiled and undeveloped wilderness beaches left on the African continent. Mabibi is a magical place of tranquil swimming bays and snorkeling reefs, coastal forests, grasslands, bush, shimmering lakes and exquisite sandy beaches. Its crystal clear, warm waters offer unparalleled snorkeling and fantastic offshore scuba diving.
Nestled in a secluded bay, Mabibi, on the Maputaland coast. Thonga Beach Lodge is situated in the heart of the Greater St Lucia Wetland Park, an internationally recognized World Heritage Site. It is the first private concession to have been granted by the Greater St Lucia Wetland Park Authority. 25 km North of Sodwana Bay in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa.

The lodge can be reached by 2-wheel drive vehicle until the last one hour, where we have a collection point. Guests are then transferred in open 4×4 vehicles on the forested dune roads to the lodge. There are two collection times from the 2-wheel drive parking: 12h00 or 15h00.
