CONSERVATION & COMMUNITY

Orchid Project
Helping to maintain the biodiversity of the Volcanoes National Park ecosystem by saving and researching rare orchids in conjunction with the University of Kigali and the Rwandan Development Board

Community Culinary School
Training community members and helping them work towards an internationally recognised Worldschef qualification

Akarabo Nursery and Garden
Working with nearby communities to reforest areas with trees indigenous to the Virunga Massif and Albertine Rift regions. The kitchen garden also supplies fresh produce to reduce food miles

Conservation Room
The lodge has an interactive space managed by a specialist conservationist dedicated to mountain gorillas and their unique habitat

Carbon offsetting
Partnering with Carbon Tanzania to offset emissions via the Yaeda Valley Forest project

Sustainable building practices
The lodge As part of their green operations, the lodge’s design minimises energy use by skylights, double-glazed windows and insulation; hybrid systems providing heated water (for swimming pools and underfloor heating); ventilation is mechanical rather than by air conditioning; and all landscaping uses indigenous species only

OVERVIEW

Named after a venerable old gorilla, Kwitonda is a lodge that takes pampering and service as seriously as it takes conservation. While your pool is heated to the perfect temperature and your favourite wines are selected from the cellar, you can also be briefed by the resident conservationist before your trek and borrow technical items from the on-site gear room.

Under-15s who can’t join the trekking aren’t left out with a full range of activities and experiences that allow them to discover this slice of paradise. The location is spectacular with a long area banking right onto Volcanoes National Park, the world’s greatest mountain gorilla stronghold. In addition to a family unit, there is a large villa with its own cinema!
