Day 1-5 – Tswalu Kalahari, Kalahari
On arrival at Johannesburg International Airport. You will hope on a short scheduled charter flight to Tswalu Kalahari Reserve.
When the Kalahari Desert is mentioned, images of a sparse, desolated desert may come to mind – when on the contrary, it is a destination drenched in colour: clear blue skies, gold and crimson sunsets, coarse green grass and rubicund dunes in parts. It is here, nestled against the sheltering slopes of the gentle Korannaberg Mountains, that the Tswalu Kalahari Reserve resides.
Safari vehicles rumble along the reserve’s dusty roads in search of cheetah, dark-maned Kalahari lions, brown hyena and herds of buffalo. Travel on foot, meandering across silent dunes, in the hope of spotting the desert-adapted black rhino. Horseback safaris take guests among the seldom-seen roan and sable antelope, tsessebe, and Hartmann’s mountain zebra. Small predators, such as the Cape fox, bat-eared fox and lynx, wander the landscape by night.
Visitors can bond with the reserve’s meerkat colonies that have grown accustomed to human contact or enjoy excursions into the folds of the Korannaberg hills that will reveal extraordinary archaeological sites and rock art left behind by the nomadic San people thousands of years ago. Spend a night among the dunes, marvelling at the seemingly endless expanse of the Kalahari, lit up by the star-studded sky.
