OVERVIEW

Bwindi and the Batwa, Kibale and chimps, the Ishasha plains and predators: this 10-day itinerary idea picks and chooses the best of Uganda to give safari lovers a thrilling time. Even better, it adds gorilla trekking amid one of Africa’s most incredible rainforests with stays at lodges and camps that are very comfortable without being extravagant.

Because Uganda is a relatively small country, this itinerary includes road transfers between Kibale Forest, Queen Elizabeth National Park and Bwindi Impenetrable Forest. Not only does travelling by vehicle give you time to digest all you’ve just experienced but it also allows your insights into bustling village life. A highlight is definitely getting the de rigueur snapshot at the world-famous monument marking the equator!

DAILY ITINERARY

Waiting for you at Entebbe International Airport will be your local driver-guide, who will make sure you reach Hotel No 5, one of Entebbe’s best-rated accommodation. Near all the major attractions, including Lake Victoria (Africa’s largest body of water), No 5 offers a gentle cocoon after an international flight and the hubbub of the city.

As your overnight stop, it has all the amenities you need to get your Uganda safari started right, including Wi-Fi, a spa and a restaurant.

Why we love Hotel No 5:

  • One of Uganda’s best boutique hotels
  • Close to the airport and other sites
  • Beautiful gardens and swimming pool
  • Spa to unwind after a long flight

It’s a short drive back to Entebbe International for your light aircraft flight to Kasese Airstrip in Kibale National Park, a wonderful forest reserve that is home to not only chimpanzees and other primates but also unusual birds, mammals and butterflies.

Your base for chimpanzee trekking is Primate Lodge Kibale, which has a range of accommodation options, including a romantic banda that is reached by ladder. The setting puts you within an easy walk for the start of trekking.

Why we love Primate Lodge Kibale:

  • Sleep in the tree canopy in the elevated Elephant Banda
  • Excellent chimp trekking and habituation experience
  • Tasteful and airy rooms that bring nature indoors
  • Explore lakes, wetlands and the Kibale Forest

Sit back for a fascinating drive to your next destination, the southern plains of Queen Elizabeth National Park. Here you have both primates and predators, exploring the Kasenyi Plains and Mweya Peninsula on game drives. Chimpanzees can be trekked in Kyambura Gorge and the Kazinga Channel offers fantastic boating.

Elephant Plains is your lodge for two nights. In addition to cosy rooms and good food, it is very close to the famous Equator Memorial that everyone must capture on camera!

Why we love Elephant Plains Lodge:

  • Panoramas all the way to Lake George
  • The closest lodge to the equator
  • Infinity pool and many terraces to enjoy
  • Friendly and professional staff to look after you

The Ishasha sector of Queen Elizabeth National Park is famous for its lion sightings – but you should check the trees as they’re active climbers who do so to escape the heat and to have better vantage points. One night at Ishasha Wilderness Camp, which you reach by road via an extended game drive, puts you near the action.

As a classic tented camp, it straddles the line between rustic and comfortable. Resident troops of vervet and colobus monkeys provide endless entertainment.

Why we love Ishasha Wilderness Camp:

  • Built along the Ntungwe River
  • Bush breakfasts in the Ishasha sector
  • Sundowners after another perfect day
  • Comfortable tented shaded by mature trees

It is always good to end a holiday on a high note and what could be better than three nights at a renowned lodge and the chance to see endangered mountain gorillas? A road transfer will usher you to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, the country’s key gorilla habitat and a pristine rainforest.

Seeing the gorillas is on many a traveller’s bucket list and Gorilla Forest Camp makes it as easy as possible with a convenient starting point in Bwindi itself.

Why we love Gorilla Forest Camp:

  • One of Uganda’s most high-end lodges
  • Special trekking chair for guests with mobility needs
  • Intimate spa and in-room yoga kits
  • Learn about local Batwa culture

Hopefully you are inspired, excited and relaxed after nine days in some of Uganda’s most enthralling wildlife areas. From seeing chimpanzees and mountain gorillas to boating amid aquatic birds and perhaps even being lucky enough to see a shy forest elephant, this trip has it all.

Your last day sees you fly from Kihihi Airstrip at Bwindi back to Entebbe International Airport, from where you can travel home or chat to us about extending your stay for a little longer.
