CONSERVATION & COMMUNITY

Conservation Roots
Reforesting areas where trees have been decimated and educating communities on the importance of preserving indigenous forests

Student Conservation Camps
Funding school goers to spend time in the wild, helping them understand conservation work and how ecosystems can be supported

Maasai Olympics
Replacing the traditional coming-of-age ritual of killing a lion for a Maasai man with a competition based on athletic prowess for both men and women that focuses on lion conservation

Green operations
Mara Plains Camp is Fair Trade Certified. Green practices include the conversion of organic scraps into methane cooking gas, composting, recycling greywater and the elimination of single-use plastics like straws and water bottles

Carbon offsetting
Guests can choose to offset their long-haul flight to Kenya by contributing to Conservation Roots or a project that provides solar lanterns for villages

OVERVIEW

Built on a bend along the Ntiakitiak River, Mara Plains Camp has an enviable position in the Olare Motorogi Conservancy on the doorstep of the famed Masai Mara National Reserve. Olare Motorogi delivers intense game viewing but sans the crowds and vehicles experienced in the Mara.

The camp has been thoughtfully laid out with a single flat-topped acacia tree – so iconic to this part of Kenya – as a focal point on the horizon. Dense trees shield the suites and common areas, providing both shade and a rousing rendition of the dawn bird chorus. A highlight must be drifting over the colossal herds of wildebeest during the mid-year Migration season in a hot-air balloon, seeing it as only eagles usually do.
