OVERVIEW

The north of Tanzania comprises some of the best wildlife areas and all of the country’s portion of the Great Wildebeest Migration through the Serengeti – this classic journey is known as the Northern Circuit. On this trip, you will have a private guide and vehicle who will take you from the frontier town of Arusha, through Tarangire, to the Ngorongoro Crater and onto the sprawling savannah of the Serengeti.

If you want privacy for a honeymoon, independence as a family with children or the time as an enthusiastic photographer to spend as long as you need to at sightings, then a privately guided itinerary is ideal. Timed right, this journey also includes the Wildebeest Migration, an epic experience not to be missed.

THIS ITINERARY WAS DESIGNED BY ANGELA

My love of Tanzania started with a spontaneous trip to Zanzibar where I was thrilled by the history, culture, beaches and unmistakably spiced air. Next I scaled Kilimanjaro, Africa’s highest point and the world’s largest free-standing mountain. The south is under-explored and I’ve been lucky enough to travel through Ruaha and Nyerere, and do conservation work in the Usanga wetlands. The ultimate Tanzanian bucket-list item is definitely trekking chimpanzees on Rubondu Island!

DAILY ITINERARY

Arusha is one of Tanzania’s busiest towns as it is the unofficial starting and ending point to the world-famous Northern Circuit. Lying in the foothills of Mount Meru, Arusha started out as a series of coffee plantations to make the most of the incredibly fertile soil.

Today, Arusha Coffee Lodge pays homage to this rich history while providing guests with great service and plenty to see and do. You can shop, dine and explore, all without leaving the grounds.

Why we love Arusha Coffee Lodge

  • Freshly roasted and brewed coffee right from the plantation
  • Shopping with a purpose at Traders Walk, a hub on the grounds
  • All the amenities of a large hotel with a homely atmosphere
  • Modern rooms with a babysitting option for young children

After a night at Arusha Coffee Lodge, it’s time to meet the professional guide who will accompany you through the rest of your safari. Driving out in your exclusive-use vehicle, you will leave the bustling town behind, which soon gives way to the flat-topped acacias, baobabs and ilala palms of Tarangire.

Oliver’s Camp is in south-eastern Tarangire near the Silale Swamps. These wetlands support aquatic birdlife and grazers, which in turn attract predators like wild dogs, lions, leopards and hyenas.

Why we love Oliver’s Camp:

  • Excellent proximity to the wildlife-life Silale Swamps
  • Exclusive game watching in a private concession
  • Hot-air ballooning at dawn over Tarangire
  • Family and honeymoon tents for special travellers

Back on the road with a picnic lunch in Lake Manyara National Park, seasonal home to thousands of flamingos. Depending on the time of year, the lake can be in full flood or dry enough to walk through. Your ultimate destination is the Ngorongoro Conservation Area.

The crown jewel is the Ngorongoro Crater: the world’s largest unbroken volcanic caldera whose fructuous soils support lush grazing and a good predator population. Home is Ngorongoro Crater Camp, right on the caldera’s rim

Why we love Ngorongoro Crater Camp:

  • Being close to the entrance gate for the crater
  • Picnicking on the crater floor on a full-day game drive
  • Private candlelit dinners under the stars
  • Classic safari tents with extra like hairdryers and plug points

After exploring the Big 5 haven of East Africa, bid the crater farewell and head to the Central Serengeti. Known for wide open plains that are perfect for cheetahs’ run-it-down hunting style, the Serengeti is also home to the Wildebeest Migration.

Down-to-earth Ewanjan Tented Camp is in the Seronera area, which the wildebeest pass through between April and June, and November and January. These times are also good for birding, photography, fewer other vehicles and game drives in cooler weather.

Why we love Ewanjan Tented Camp:

  • A dedicated kids’ programme with fun activities
  • Moving with the annual Wildebeest Migration
  • Tented intimacy in the Seronera Valley
  • Uninterrupted view of the East African sunset

Your last days in Tanzania are with Olakira, a true mobile Migration camp. Between June and October, the camp takes in the Mara River crossings. Then, from December to March, it moves to the Southern Serengeti for the excitement of the birthing and rutting seasons.

Like the rest of your trip, your private guide will be seeking out fascinating sightings for you to enjoy. After your final night under canvas, you are driven to Kilimanjaro Airport for your onward journey.

Why we love Olakira Migration Camp:

  • Unique tent design that allows for all-night stargazing
  • Always in the heart of the Wildebeest Migration
  • Ballooning over the Serengeti to see the herds
  • Special photographic vehicle available in the north
