OVERVIEW

Three very different areas make this itinerary a stand-out. All are classics on the Botswana safari circuit and we’ve handpicked accommodation that puts you in the heart of each. Whether you are newlyweds who want light adventure, a family who wants to make new memories or a photographer who wants to test your skills in Africa, this itinerary has something for everyone.

The Khwai Community Area allows night drives and off-roading with access to Moremi Game Reserve. Up north, the Linyanti Concession offers a more exclusive experience than neighbouring Chobe National Park while Shinde Lagoon is within a private concession of the Okavango Delta. Accommodation is comfortable with attentive staff and experienced guides who take pride in finding you intriguing sightings.

THIS ITINERARY WAS DESIGNED BY JOANNE

I lived in Botswana’s safari capital – Maun – for seven years where I worked as everything from a camp manager to a travel agent. Being in the epicentre allowed me experience innumerable lodges first-hand and understand how the Okavango’s fluctuating levels affect your safari.

DAILY ITINERARY

It’s a road trip to remember as you leave Maun by transfer vehicle and head to the Khwai Community Area. The tar soon becomes dirt so be prepared for some bumps along the way. But it’s all worth it as the bush thickens and you start seeing giraffes pop their heads above the treeline.

Khwai Bush Camp has an intimate feel and is perfect for the little ones as it has a full kids’ club for when the adults go exploring.

Why we love Khwai Bush Camp:

  • Age-appropriate activities at the kids’ club
  • Off-roading and night drives in the private concession
  • Brick chalets provide peace of mind if you’re a first-timer
  • In high season, enjoy a nightcap at your in-room fireplace

Those lucky enough to be spending three nights or more at Linyanti Bush Camp have a special treat included: a scenic helicopter flip over the concession! There’s no better way to understand how vast the area is than from the air as you spot elephants, buffalo and other big game from above.

Back on terra firma, your next vehicle could be a mokoro if water levels permit. Being poles through the Linyanti’s tributaries lets you appreciate this astonishing ecosystem at eye level.

Why we love Linyanti Bush Camp:

  • Just six spacious tents make up this elegant camp
  • Have a bush bubble bath out on your private deck
  • Nature walks and night drives with knowledgeable guides
  • 180°-degree views over the Linyanti savannah

Bid your guide farewell at Saile Airstrip for your flight to the Shinde Airstrip. After the wide-open spaces of the Linyanti, Shinde Lagoon offers a completely different environment of mangosteen trees, ilala palms and the occasional iconic cry of an African fish eagle.

Shinde Camp has a pedigree dating back decades as one of the very first camps built in Botswana. Since then, it has kept up with the times without losing its timeless appeal as a Delta stalwart.

Why we love Shinde Camp:

  • A fairy-tale setting on a private island in the Delta
  • Up to three activities a day can be arranged
  • The family room can take five guests
  • The pool has fantastic views over the floodplain

It’s a bittersweet day as you get on the vehicle at Shinde for the last time to be driven to the airstrip for your flight back to Maun. For more than a week, you have been cocooned in laid-back comfort with delicious meals, friendly staff and hopefully lots of wildlife encounters.

They say there is no cure for being bitten by the proverbial safari bug so don’t be surprised if you’re already thinking about your next trip as the pilot takes off!
