OVERVIEW

A private starbed attached to your room; a naturally heated hot tub; some of the most spectacular river views you’ll ever see… This trip has them all and more. Designed for safari lovers who want to see the best of Zambia and stay in camps with solid reputations, it offers 10 days in Lower Zambezi and South Luangwa, two of Zambia’s stalwarts.

Another advantage is that this itinerary allows you to be as active as you like. If you just want to relax on game drives, your guides will work hard to find you unusual sightings. But if you want to leave the vehicle behind on a few days, you can lace up your boots for  gentle walking or some kayaking.

THIS ITINERARY WAS DESIGNED BY JOANNE

One of the few places that offers a true walking safari – between camps – rather than just a simple nature walk. I love Zambia because it is still very authentic: up on the Busanga Plains in Kafue, you’ll have a true picture of Africa at its most pristine and untouched.

DAILY ITINERARY

Your plane leaves the capital city of Lusaka behind and is soon flying over the pristine bush of Lower Zambezi National Park that’s protected by Mupata Gorge, the Zambezi Escarpment and the Zambezi River. You touch down at Royal Airstrip where your driver-guide is waiting to drive you to Chongwe Camp.

On the confluence of the Chongwe and Zambezi Rivers, the camp is friendly and relaxed. Children are welcome and four nights gives you time to really make yourself at home.

Why we love Chongwe Camp:

  • All tents have lovely views over the lazy Chongwe River
  • The hide is perfect for spotting shyer animals
  • Game drives and nature walks in the park
  • Canoeing, cruises and seasonal fishing on the river

It’s back to Lusaka today to catch your flight to Mfuwe Airport at South Luangwa National Park. Waiting will be your driver-guide from Kafunta River Lodge who will give you your first mini game drive through to the park to your accommodation for the next two nights.

Overlooking a productive floodplain, Kafunta offers a wonderful introduction to South Luangwa. Back at the lodge, be sure to venture into the hot tub, which is heated by a natural geothermal spring!

Why we love Kafunta River Lodge:

  • The Fig Tree Spa soothes away any stress
  • Work out in the bush at the ‘gym hut’
  • Fascinating hours in the hide
  • Sink into the warmth of the natural hot tub

After two blissful days, it’s time to slip into the final leg of your Zambia safari with a drive from Kafunta to sister camp, Three Rivers. South Luangwa is the world’s premium walking safaris destination and this is a great camp from which to strike out with your guide and an armed ranger.

Another exhilarating activity is a private sleep-out where you drift off as the stars come out and allow the first glimmers of dawn to wake you up…

Why we love Three Rivers Camp:

  • Every room has its own starbed
  • Views of the Kapamba and Luangwa Rivers
  • Candle-lit dinners on the river’s edge
  • Understated rooms in muted earth tones

After a magical three nights at Three Rivers, it is sadly time to retrace your steps with a drive back to Mfuwe Airport and a flight onto the Kenneth Kaunda International Airport in Lusaka. The flights give you time to reflect on everything you may have seen: baboons foraging on the riverbank, swarms of African skimmers landing, perhaps even a leopard snoozing in the bough of a tree.
